Despite the fact, that many students do incur debt from their college years, the hope for a better career and future because of their college experience can be a nice reality. Having to experience a financial hole can be avoided by securing and winning a sport scholarship. What a great way to help your family, by achieving at such a high level on the court, that you are able to receive an athletic scholarship for your talent, hard work, and efforts. As most of us know, colleges and universities can easily cost $30,000-$70,000 per year. Earning an athletic scholarship can definitely off-set those costs!
The reality is playing college basketball can be like work at times. However, it is fun and exciting to be a part of a team and school. Playing a big game versus a cross-town rival, such as UNC vs. Duke or UCLA vs. USC can produce some great times for the players and fans alike. Playing before big crowds can be a ton of fun and thrilling for everyone involved. I experienced playing college ball in Hutchinson Kansas at the Sports Arena and loved the excitement of the approximately 7,500 fans in attendance. The energy in that arena was amazing. The coaches and sports writers even ranked us #1 in the nation for one week. College basketball can be great fun, because of the people you will meet, the connections you will make and the loyalties people hold in their hearts for their alma maters.
Having the opportunity to play college basketball is a blessing and something you can be proud of yourself for doing in later years. Whenever I meet guys who have played college ball I nearly always feel a sort of fraternity feeling with them, like we have been through something together.
Winning a college basketball scholarship allows you to go through college without having to work a bunch of odds and ends jobs to make ends meet(at least during the season anyways). Once you receive your degree at the end, you can be proud of your accomplishment and hope it leads you to a lifetime of successful jobs and adventures. .
In closing, college athletics is a great way to take care of yourself financially until you find that first job or career out of college. The goal of college is to better your life and make your future as bright as it can possibly be! A college scholarship can definitely help you save financially, have fun, be disciplined, and find honor and respect for the time you put into being a better person and athlete during your college experience. I am here to help and serve you on your journey.

My Recruitment Story: During my senior year of high school, my high school coach, Bob Bodenheimer, and I took a drive to meet with Coach Mark Turgeon, who recently stepped away from coaching as the University of Maryland head coach, but was formerly a University of Kansas assistant coach, to discuss the possibility of me coming to play for the University of Kansas. I must say that I was absolutely thrilled on my dream to play NCAA Division I basketball and receive a COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP for all my efforts. Coach Turgeon was offering me a position to play on his University of Kansas JV team and try to work my way up to Roy Williams varsity program. I must admit,
I was interested by Coach Turgeon's offer, however, after multiple recruiting trips, I decided upon Hutchinson Community College as my college choice. This is where they play the National Junior College tournament in a 7,500 capacity filled arena. I wanted to feel like I was “moving up” in the basketball ranks, not moving down, since the high school I attended stadium held approximately 2,500 fans. Basketball is big in Kansas, and people would come from miles around to see a well-played basketball game. Winter excitement for the game somehow warmed the air!
My experience at Hutchinson was an interesting one. I enjoyed many aspects of being a student-athlete at the school, had a girlfriend, and made solid grades. In regards to playing basketball at Hutch, I was playing behind a local star who went on to play at the University of Oklahoma and made honorable mention All Big Eight at that time. Our team had a number of experienced shooter's who could shoot and score, so we needed John to distribute the ball and 'run the show' and he did that very efficiently. My thoughts about this situation are, “If you are going to play behind someone, at least play behind someone who is really talented." We were ranked number 1 in the nation for one week, but then lost that same week to Dodge City Community College.(i.e. we needed to get the heck out of Dodge-although it was a home game that night- lol). We ended up with a solid record that season with 27 wins.
During the season I was evaluating my experience at Hutch, I was realizing as the season progressed that my faith and the Church were becoming a lot more important to me. I remembered a school that recruited me out of high school, a Jesuit institution in Kansas City, Missouri called Rockhurst College, which now is a University (an NCAA DII school). I made a decision to leave Hutchinson and pursue my faith, education, and college basketball career at Rockhurst. I received a full ride scholarship for the 1992-93 basketball season. I just remember thinking to myself, “Wow. This is a great situation!” In 1992, in the Midwest, at the ripe age of 19, that felt like a good deal of money for a scholarship and was a nice blessing to our family.
My experience at Rockhurst did have its positives and negatives, like anyone’s life and college years can. I made a decision after two years of full ride scholarships at Rockhurst that it was time to get a "real job" and go to work. For a few years after Rockhurst, I did construction work and helped build and paint houses with Dan Heinen's construction company. After a few years of doing that, I began to realize that I should go back to school and complete my degree. I decided to go back to the university in my hometown, and finish my degree. I graduated with a BA degree in Physical Education from Washburn University in 2002.
More recently, I completed the Coaching and Athletic Administration Master’s program at Concordia University of Irvine. Approximately one year into their program I was inspired to start a recruiting service for high school athletes. After getting this idea and mission I made a stern decision to finish the program in its entirety (May 2017 graduation) before starting this business, which I call SoCal Sport Scholarships & Scouting Services.
The goal here at SoCal Sport Scholarships & Scouting Services is to offer you a local, full service scouting/recruiting service that creates a platform to connect you to that “good fit” college program, coach, and school. Another goal we have is to keep you away from acquiring too many student loans and debt. This goal can be accomplished by helping you obtain a full or partial ride BASKETBALL SCHOLARSHIP for your years of hard work, effort, and developed, yet God-given talent.
I have experience as a Southern California high school basketball coach and former Midwest college athlete, my goal is to connect coaches and student-athletes with each other in a way that will prosper both parties. I am very much looking forward to serving you and working together to achieve these goals over the year(s) ahead.
Sincerely,
Michael Weishaar
